The Evolution of Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) Pt.1

Behaviouristic CALL

Stage that was invented in the 50s and later developed in the 60s and 70s. The type of activities that predominates in this phase are drill-and-practice exercises.

Memrise is one example of this stage.

Communicative CALL

“The focus was not so much on what the student did with the machine, but rather what they did with each other while working with the computer” (Warschauer y Healey, 1998:57).
It comes after the Behaviouristic CALL in the 70s, and emphasizes the processes of thinking and interactivity.
What it changed about the previous CALL is that the student does not just realize a simple drill, it has to do a complete process of search, choice and interaction with the computer to obtain the correct answer.

Internet Polyglot is one example of this stage.
